Energy Management System (EMS) Design

This energy management research connects generation and storage models to operating decisions, from rule-based microgrid coordination to battery scheduling and marine hybrid powertrains.

DC Microgrid Energy Management

The rule-based DC microgrid study coordinates converter roles, battery charging and PV limitation through bus signalling. Its operating rules cover planned grid/island handover and surplus-generation control.

Battery Energy Scheduling and Optimisation

Research at the University of Waterloo incorporates battery degradation into GAMS-based microgrid optimisation, linking scheduling choices to battery use. Read the battery-degradation EMS or the IEEE PESGM 2020 paper.

Marine Hybrid Powertrains

The 3MW marine fuel-cell project, led by the author, connected vessel duty cycles to battery sizing, dispatch and heat generation. The related thermal evaluation examines the enclosure environment around the equipment.
